Is the Doctor in?

One of the main contributors to an organization’s success is the employee's commitment to the organization. How can one gauge this commitment? Does this commitment exist in the medical field? In most social network groups, employed physicians speak poorly of their employers and hospital administrators. The common sentiment is that physicians feel that they lost their autonomy. There is also a general sense of uncertainty and unfairness. As one of my friends just texted today about his compensation model: “ Bonus system is entirely opaque.” Many physicians seem to be constantly looking for a “way out”; they are committed to their patients and their profession, but not nearly as committed to the organizations they work at. This results in high turnover and poor physician retention. How can we change this narrative? One thing that I noted is that hospitals have mission statements that focus on patients and the health of the community. However, these mission statements do not indicate any commitment to physicians. I think the commitment to patients should include a commitment to employees and physicians in order to foster a healthy culture with physicians that are truly committed to the growth and improvement of the organization as a whole.
